Friendship, Solidarity and Shame: On the Idea of Community in Augustine's Confessions and The City of God

並列摘要

Friendship is an important topic in Augustine's works, through which he not only analyzed the corruption of human nature, but also established the core theory of his political theology. This article discusses Augustine 's criticism of the classic idea of community and his contributions to the idea of Christian community and political theory. Augustine found the idea of friendship as the base for the community in classical philosophy such as the works of Plato and Aristotle, but he criticized the rationalism of classical philosophy so strongly that he parted from the classical theory of virtues and formed some kind of important relationship with modem thought. However, Augustine was impressed by the classical idea of community, which kept him away from modem individualism. Through the analysis of friendship, this article points out that we should understand Augustine better on the subtle balance of classical and modem thoughts.
