HER Monument: A Review on Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza's In Memory of Her

並列摘要

Professor Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza's masterpiece In Memory of Her was first published in 1983 when feminist biblical studies flourished, especially in U.S.A. Among five types of feminist biblical studies is Schüssler Fiorenza labeled as a "liberationist" (according to Carolyn Osiek), who recognizes the contamination of Bible by patriarchy and reinterprets it for the purpose of the liberation of women. In Memory of Her is characterized by this "liberationist" attitude with its strong intention of rewriting the Bible as "her-story" and its unified perspective from the past, the present and the future. In Memory of Her consists of three parts. In the first part, the author elaborates a specific critical feminist biblical hermeneutics. In the latter two parts, with the help of this hermeneutics, she reconstructs the origin of Christianity. Whereas the subversive reconstruction stirred up widespread praise as well as fierce query at the moment of its publication, the special hermeneutics in the first part has been proved the more influential contribution of this book to both her personal career and feminist biblical scholarship for more than thirty years. The famous "four hermeneutics", i.e. hermeneutics of suspicion, proclamation, remembrance and creative actualization expounded in her second English book Bread not Stone (1984), is actually the summary of the methodology of feminist biblical hermeneutics in In Memory of Her. In addition, In Memory of Her may be also the earliest example of her current project of "Comparative Feminist Studies of Sacred Texts / Scriptures". In spite of some questionable viewpoints, such as its over-emphasis on the issues of women leadership and of "the ekklēsia of women", In Memory of Her is still a monumental classic of western feminist scholarship with its tremendous originality and influential success in both academic field and Christian churches.
