Evangelist of "Revolutionary Christianity": Harry F. Ward and the Christian Churches in the Republic of China

並列摘要

Dr. Harry F. Ward (1873-1966) was one of the leading figures in the "Social Gospel" and "Christian Socialist" movements in the USA, during the first half of the 20th Century. In the spring of 1925, he visited China on his round-the-world tour. His lectures and writings about industrial democracy, Christian socialism, and above all, his speeches on "revolutionary Christianity" made quite an impact on Chinese society. These in turn, became a hallmark of him, and of his visit to China. While he was in China, Dr. Ward witnessed the "Anti-Imperialist Patriotic Movement", which was partly triggered by the "May 30th Incident". He then became a strong supporter of the Chinese in their struggle for freedom, justice and equality; and he advocated for the cause of the restoration of China's full sovereignty when he returned to the USA. This article discusses Dr. Ward's activities in and for China, which has largely been ignored, if not entirely forgotten.
