The Dissemination and Influence of Toyohiko Kagawa and his Christian Socialism in Modern China

摘要

Toyohiko Kagawa, was one of the most preeminent Japanese social reformers and Christian leaders of the 20th century, and had a good reputation in the Chinese church from the 1920's onward. He was frequently invited to visit China, and lectured in the National Christian Council of China (NCC) or the Church of Christ in China (CCC) meetings when he visited. His preaching focused on Christian Socialism, which emphasized "the movement of love", and did not agreed with Marxism, and especially Marx's ideas of violent class struggle. He proposed "brotherhood economics" as a tool for social change. For example, building economic cooperatives, as an alternative to both capitalism and communism, is also a part of this peace movement. His ideas were widely publicized through the circulation of his books, articles and lectures in the Chinese church circles, and were received as a social gospel by many Chinese Christians. However, Kagawa's Christian socialism, especially his ideas concerning the labor movement and brotherhood economics, were not practiced in China. Although in contrast, these ideas benefited millions in Japan. Factors both outside and inside of the Chinese church can explain this. The economic and legal situation in modem China did not allow the church to take a leading role. Above all, many Christians, as well as church leaders, could not identify Kagawa's ideas with their own needs. Neither NCC nor CCC had a strategy or detailed plans for practicing these ideas. This does not mean Kagawa's Christian socialism has no significance in modem China. At the very least, it provided an alternative way for the Chinese church to reform society in a Christian way.
