從《滌罪正規》看明末清初傳教士對「罪」的跨文化翻譯

Cross-cultural Translations of "Sin" by Missionaries in Late Ming and Early Qing Dynasty: Taking Giulio Aleni's Dizui Zhenggui (Correct Rules for the Elimination of Sins) as an Example

摘要


「罪」是天主教神學思想中的重要概念,也是天主教教義的核心問題。由於中西方文化對「罪」的認知差異,使其成為中國人認識、理解天主教思想的一大障礙。因此,將此概念融入中國文化視域,僅僅憑藉簡單的文字翻譯是不夠的,還需要譯者對其進行深入的跨文化翻譯。晚明耶穌會士艾儒略(1582-1649)所著的《滌罪正規》,作為早期系統介紹天主教「罪」概念的中文作品,對「罪」的中文譯介進行了有益探索。其採用以「述」補「譯」的策略,借用歐洲教義書籍和儒學典籍中的經典表達,並輔以精彩的修辭論述,對「罪」進行跨文化翻譯。這樣的跨文化翻譯方式對其後天主教中文著作產生了較大影響。探究《滌罪正規》的跨文化翻譯策略和方式可管窺明末清初時期天主教核心概念的東傳嘗試。

Sin constitutes one of the most important concepts of Christian theological thought and is one of the core issues of Christian doctrine. Due to the difference in the understanding of the concept of sin between Christian and Confucian cultures, it became a major obstacle to Chinese understanding of Christian thought. When integrating the Catholic concept of sin into the Chinese cultural horizon, a simple literal translation is not enough. Translators need to conduct an in-depth cross-cultural translation. Dizui Zhenggui (Correct Rules for the Elimination of Sins), elaborated in China in the late Ming Dynasty by the Jesuit Giulio Aleni (1582-1649), was an early work in Chinese, that introduced the Catholic concept of sin and made a useful exploration of the Chinese translation and introduction of this concept. This article analyzes Dizui Zhenggui and finds that its author, Aleni, adopted the strategy of supplementing the literal translation through exposition. In doing so, he borrowed classic expressions from both European Christian books and Confucian books and used them, along with supplemental rhetorical discussions, to translate and introduce this concept. Such cross-cultural translations have had a major impact on later Catholic Chinese books. Studying the cross-cultural translation strategy of Dizui Zhenggui gives an insightful glimpse into the early attempts to pass on the core ideas of Catholicism in the East.
