This article discusses how Kaifeng Jews depicted the image of Moses in the stone inscriptions, based on the contextual analysis between the Torah and the stone inscriptions, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, when Kaifeng Jews needed to construct a new identity. This article shows that the image of Moses accepting the Scripture and his image as the law mediator in the Sinai tradition, were revealed in the stone inscriptions, while the Exodus tradition was absent, contributing to the reconstructing of the image of Moses as a Chinese sage. For the Kaifeng Jews, the role of the elites, the necessity of constructing an identity for themselves, and the concept of heaven have all contributed to the image of Moses in the inscriptions.
