Witness from the Edge: The Anonymous Commentary on Deuteronomy in Paris, BnF, NAL 1740 and Carolingian Exegesis

Collecting, supplementing and transmitting patristic exegetical tradition is usually considered as the major method of biblical interpretation in the Carolingian age. An anonymous commentary on Deuteronomy, preserved as marginalia in Paris, BnF, NAL 1740, suggests an alternative mode of Carolingian exegetical practice. Judging from internal and external evidence, the commentary was most likely the product of biblical education among the clerics of Lyon cathedral at the beginning of the ninth century. The anonymous exegete adopted the exegetical heritage of multiple patristic authors, especially Isidore of Seville, in a flexible way, and meanwhile, also demonstrated a high level of originality. The anonymous commentary on Deuteronomy combines the Deuteronomy-Gospels typological motif as well as the idea that the Christian Church is "the Spiritual Israel," proposes the exegetical imagination of a community of faith under the leadership of clerics, and interprets the Old Law in Deuteronomy as the religious and moral principles of this community, via both the "literal sense" and the "spiritual sense".
