The Adaptions of Bible Stories from Late Ming to the Beginning of 20^(th) Century

Due to Roman Catholic Church's own prohibition, Catholic missionaries in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties had often refrained from producing a Chinese translation of the Bible, especially for the Old Testament. And with the few Chinese translations of the Old Testament, the biblical legends and tales underwent evident adaptions in the Chinese context: they were transformed into different forms of texts, such as collections of short stories like Shan Song Xing Shi 衫松行實and the prolonged tales in traditional Chinese art form like Sheng Jiao Gu Shi Xiao Shuo Gu Ci 聖教古史小說鼓詞. Focusing on Shan Song Xing Shi and Sheng Jiao Gu Shi Xiao Shuo Gu Ci, this paper attempts to examine through a comparative textual analysis specific transformations of the Old Testament stories in Chinese Catholic writings from the Ming Dynasty well into the early Republic-of-China Period, and to further discuss the literary effects and social-religious impact such textual transformations may lead to.
