摘要

本文嘗試討論臺灣傳統文人之中，頗具代表性的連橫，他一生所投入的傳播事業：任報刊筆政、創結詩社、開辦書局、設立漢學研究會，發行期刊等等，檢視殖民地政府的政策、現代化進程中的臺灣，如何激勵他在這些漢學傳播活動的踐履，造成他的挫敗，又如何代表了與他同時代的知識分子的處境，他們肆應世務的方式，從而反映出臺灣被割據予日本治理後深刻的社會變遷。

This article examines the life and work of Lian Heng, a significant figure among Taiwanese literati. Lian Heng's lifelong devotion to the promotion of literature includes work in editorial jobs for journals and newspapers, the organizing of poetry societies, the opening of bookstores, the establishment of Chinese studies organizations and the publication of periodicals. To what extent did the policies of the colonial government and the modernization of Taiwan affect his practices in the promotion of Chinese studies, and what obstacles did this create for him? How were Lian Heng's circumstances representative of that of his contemporaries' and their ways of coping with the environment? These questions can help us to understand the changing face of Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period.
