Children's Literature and Cultural Studies

Based on 'critical language studies' and 'ideology critique', this paper aims to analyze the relationships between children's literature and cultural studies. It can be divided into three aspects: first, it argues that cultural studies didn't have an immediate impact on Western children's literature because English -language children's literature is mostly shaped by essentially western traditional humanism and middle-class ideologies; Second, it suggests that a cultural studies approach to children 's literature should be grounded in ideological analysis and narratalagical concepts; Third, it offers a practical example of a cultural studies approach to children's literature in a discussion of Grandad's Gifts, a short story by Australian writer Paul Jennings, and its transformations into a picture book and an episode of the television series Round the Twist. The paper concludes with the observation that scholars in the field must be sensitive to how adult power over the production of books shapes their messages, and to how particular ideologies organise the ideas about the world represented in children's books.
