In his essay "Ts'ung Kao O Sheng-P'ing Lun Ch'i Tso-P'in Szu-Hsiang" (A biographical approach to Kao O's literary works and thought), Mr. Wu Shih-ch'ang maintains that Kao O must be the author of the last 40 chapters of "Hung Lou Meng"; his theory is based on his interpretation of a poem "Yueh Hsiao Shan Fang Yi Kao" (月小山房遺稿). The purpose of this article is to show that Mr. Wu actually misunderstood the meaning of Kao O's poem; moreover, an analysis of the contents of the last forty chapters of "Hung Lou Meng" demonstrates that they have merely been corrected by Kao O, but could definitely not have been composed by him.
