A Summary On The Communication Network In Chiu-ch'ih Shan District In The Middle Ages

並列摘要

In China during the Middle Ages, in the basins of Kuan Chung and the River Wei, westward to the drainage areas of the Ho and the Hwang, and south-east to the plain of Ch'eng-tu (成都) there were three highways connecting one another. These three routes formed a triangle (▽). In the middle of the triangle was an important area........ Ch'eng-chou (成州) (northwest of present-day Hsi-ho hsien). The basic core of Ch'eng-chou was the solid, fortified and rich Chiu-ch'ih Shan (about 50-60 miles the south of Hsi-ho hsien), which became a strategic and communication centre of the aforesaid area. There were also three main roads in Ch'eng-chou: one went northward to Ch'in-chou (present-day T'ien-shui hsien), connecting the great highway in Kuan Chung, Ho and Hwang; one, southeast to Ho Ch'ih hsien (the west of Fei hsien), connecting the route between Kuan Chung and Ch'eng-tu; one, southwest to Fu Tsin hsien (Wu-tu hsien nowadays), joining the route among Ho, Hwang and Ch'eng-tu. This thesis studies mainly the courses of the above-mentioned three routes in Ch'eng-chou and their functions in strategy and communication. Because the main materials for the study of the correct routes are the poems of Tu Fu, the great poet of the T'ang Dynasty, describing his travel from Ch'in-chou to the plain of Ch'eng-tu, there is a chapter to study the course of his journey. In the last part of the southeast route, the water of the mountain streams was deep and rapid, and it was often deepened in the Han and T'ang Periods, so there will be another chapter to deal with the water works in ancient days.
