中國上古音聲母問題

On Some Archaic Chinese Initials

並列摘要

After a brief survey of the initial consonants which are reconstructed for Archaic Chinese, the existence of a series of voiceless nasals and liquid is explored. This is done by a rigid observation of the principles of forming phonetic compounds in the Chinese script. Aside from the voiceless labial nasal *hm- which has been suggested by Tung Tung-ho, a series of other voiceless nasals, such as *hn-, *hng. *hngw-, and a voiceless liquid *hl- are proposed. The subsequent development of these consonants in Ancient Chinese of the 6th century is as follows:- *hn- → s- / ______j- → th- /______r- → th- / ______vowels →*hng- → x- *hngw-→xw- *hl → th- / ______j → th- / ______vowels
