The article is in six parts. Part 1 begins with an examination of the tradition that the pronunciation of the character 甄 was changed to 真 because it was a homophone of 堅, the name of Sun Chien 孫堅, and, therefore, tabooed, and comes to the conclusion that, because the Chinese script is non-phonetic, it is impossible to establish the truth or falsity of this tradition. Parts 2 and 3 deal with the Wu taboo as found in the extant Huai-nan tzu. Part 2 begins with an instance of the taboo of the character 堅 in Hsü Shen's commentary on the Huai-nan tzu. Through examples of the taboo of the character 權, it was established that 堅was a Wu taboo and not a Sui taboo. Part 3 deals with the taboo of 權. It is concluded that Wu taboos were observed in Hsü Shen's commentary on the Huai-nan tzu, presumably because in the course of transmission, there was a manuscript made in Wu times or shortly after the fall of Wu. Part 4 deals with taboos in works of authors of Wu, while Part 5 deals with authors who, though living after the fall of Wu, were descended from men of Wu. Part 6 deals with characters used to replace tabooed characters, amongst which the character 銓 (or 詮) used in place of 權deserves particular attention. Although 銓appeared twice in Pre-Ch'in, once in Western Han and eight times in Easter Han, the author is of the opinion that 銓 as a genuine Pre-Han character is suspect. Probably it was never, or exceedingly rarely, used before it was used as a taboo substitute for 權in the early Six Dynasties period.
