揚雄《方言》與《孟子》

Yang Xiong's Fang Yan and the Mencius

並列摘要

Yang Xiong's 揚雄 Fang yan 方言 consists of two distinct, though intertwined, parts. One part is a glossary, similar in form to the Er ya 爾雅, particularly the three opening chapters. The other is a handbook for the investigation of dialects. In the former part there is a group of some twenty words all taken from the Mencius. This deserves study on two counts. First, in some cases Yang Xiong offers an interpretation of the Mencius text different from, and very possibly superior to that of Zhao Qi 趙岐. Second, the fact that this part has incorporated a group of glosses direct from one work argues for the likelihood that that was in fact, the way it was compild. This has immense significance not only for the Fang yan, but also for the Er ya (at least the three opening chapters), as It raises the possibility that most past studies of the Er ya failed to grasp the way the work was put together.
