It is generally held that Su Shi harboured contempt if not antagonism towards Liu Yong. The main object of this paper is to demonstrate, through detailed examination of his poems, that Su Shi, who made his name in poetic circles much later than Liu Yong, actually paid close attention to the latter's work, which has exerted considerable influence on his writing. It argues that Liu's achievement in poetry had a tremendous psychological influence on Su, and constituted a hurdle in Su's passage to success as a poet. His admiration for Liu, and his aspiration to surpass him constituted the major competitive force which motivated Su to finally pursue a new path in irregular verse deviating from the established tradition.
