A Critical Commentary in the Essay on "Prophetic Charts" by Lin Shidiui of the Late Ming

並列摘要

This article is a critical commentary on the essay on "prophetic charts" (tuchen) written by Lin Shidui, a scholar from Zhejiang in the late Ming, included in his collected work Hezha congtan. Prophetic charts appeared in Chinese history as early as the Shang dynasty and they became prominent in the Han dynasty under the. intensive influence of the Cosmological School. Since then, they were involved in political, social causes, religious and intellectual activities, and display prominently in historical literature, literary miscellanies and religious scripture. These records are widely scatterd and there had been few attempts to put them in a collection, let alone studying them in a scholarly fashion. Lin Shidui's essay was one of the few informative treatises by premodern scholars on the vicissitudes of these prophetic charts from the first century B.C. down to his own time. The present commentary aims at identifying his sources and elucidating the findings to make a critical appraisal of his work and bring it to the attention of interested scholars.
