論隋唐時代的兩部地理總志:《區宇圖志》與《括地志》

On Two Comprehensive Gazetteers of the Sui-Tang Dynasties: Quyu Tuzhi and Kuodi Zhi

並列摘要

This article seeks to scrutinize the background and approach of the compilation of the two most important comprehensive gazetteers, the Quyu tuzhi and Kuodi zhi, during the Sui-Tang dynasties which have not been adequately investigated. It also reviews the collation of the editions of Kuodi zhi from the Qing dynasty to the present day. In so doing we may gain a better understanding of the comprehensive gazetteers and its relationship with the political and cultural development in the middle dynasties. The compilation of these two comprehensive gazetteers by the Sui-Tang rulers was aimed at edifying the advent of a flourishing age and consolidation empire, and was closely related to the rulers' extravagant predilections and grand political ambition. The changes of redactor-compilers and the contents of these gazetteers underscored the blending of the conflicting personalities and cultures of north and south China under unified, centralized rule. Enlightened by the compilation method of the Quyu tuzhi, Prince Li Tai assigned his officials to compile the Kuodi zhi with divisions of province and prefecture which set the approach and pattern for later comprehensive gazetteers. Among the several existing editions of Kuodi zhi, the collation of He Cijun is the most comprehensive one though it still needs some supplement. As the "Xuliie ," the seperate preface of the Kuodi zhi which contains the Zhenguan shisannian dabu (the household record of A.D. 639) is the vital document for verifying the administrative districts in the early Tang, considerable rectifications have been made on the text. Most of the collators have agreed on the number of three hundred and fifty-eight prefectures listed in the Zhenguan shisannian dabu. The surviving contents of the Kuodi zhi are quite fragmentary and incomplete, and only He's edition has made some rectifications. However, numerous mistakes and omissions remain and much revision of his work is needed.
