The title of this paper is taken from two lines of Wensin dialong (The Literary Mind and the Carving of the Dragon), a book of literary theory and criticism written circa 501 Hong Kong has been relatively insulated from other parts of China for more than half a century, and English has been customarily used for administration and commercial purposes. For this reason, Hong Kong has kept a more traditional style of Chinese practical writing. This paper attempts to examine the tradition of Chinese practical writing and its indications from a theoretical perspective. Through a diachronic study of the principles of practical writing of various genres we will gain some insight into the common practice over more than two thousand years. This paper also claims that the major theories of pragmatics and functional stylistics in modern linguistic studies are largely in line with the genre theory in Wenxin diaolong. It is believed that an understanding of various issues in this area would assist people in Hong Kong to develop some useful approaches to Chinese practical writing.
