唐甄先世傳承考

A Re-examination on the Lineage of Tang Zhen's Ancestors

並列摘要

Although Tang Zhen's statecraft thought has continually received attentions from scholars, Tang's family history has been neglected for a long time. As we all know, every family background does, to a certain extent, bring to the descendants a lot of effects in terms of thought and decision-making. So, is meaningful and useful to make a detailed study on the lineage of Tang Zhen, from which his thought can be clearly traced. As a descendant of the Tang family, Tang Zhen had written the Epitaph of Tang Jietai(唐階泰墓表) .Briefly recording his family background and his descendants in the Ming dynasty, it is regarded as a first-hand and valuable source that can help us understand more about the history of his ancestors. Most contemporary scholars, without doubt, believed and followed what Tang Zhen stated in their monographs and articles. Nevertheless, this epitaph was not very accurate in factual accounts and many mistakes could be found when compared with two new sources, the Random Selections from the Tangshi Zupu(《唐氏族譜》摘抄) and A Pedigree Chart of the Tang Family(唐氏世系表), all contained in the Qianshu zhu潛書注 being published in 1984. These are important sources to study the lineage of Tang Zhen's ancestors. Regrettably, until now no one has appreciated their value. Thus, a new and thorough investigation should be done to lay a solid foundation for future studies on the thought of Tang Zhen. Instead of fully utilizing these sources in the Qianshu zhu, this article also solicits other materials, such as local gazetters and private historical writings, to re-examine the ancestors of Tang Zhen and critically assess the accuracy of the Random Selections from the Tangshi Zupu.
