唐人豪俠小說篇目考輯

Most scholars have based their research on the knight-errantry novels in the Tang dynasty in light of the nineteen such novels listed in the Taiping Guangji. Not an all-round author or compiler has been identified so far. The present paper, starting with a survey of the situation of the Tang dynasty writings on knight-errantry, is focused on the existing titles of all the Tang dynasty writings or the titles of writings which have appeared in the catalogues, including tales of the marvelous, tales of the mystery and the supernatural, miscellaneous histories and miscellaneous biographies. Ninety-seven novels on knight-errantry written during the Tang and the Five Dynasties period have been collected. These Tang dynasty novels have been categorized into tales of the marvelous and literary sketches in four different periods, namely, the embryonic stage, development stage, florescent stage and declining stage. Careful studies have been made of each stage in terms of its source, versions, contents, popularity and change to shed light on the creation and transmutation of the Tang dynasty knight-errantry novels.
