張岱與《陶庵夢憶》

Zhang Dai and His Tao'an Mengyi

並列摘要

As an important piece of literary writing of the Late Ming and Early Qing periods, Zhang Dai's memoirs, Tao'an mengyi, has recently been a popular topic of scholarly discussion. The primary meaning of this book, however, is highly controversial. In this paper, the author argues that the primary meaning of Tao'an mengyi is to strongly express Zhang Dai's political and cultural identification with the Late Ming dynasty, the lifestyle and values of the Late Ming intellectuals. He also discusses the relationship of Zhang Dai's remembrance of his past and present life. This paper focuses on the ways by which Zhang Dai constructed his present life by remembering his past. As to the structure of the book, the author points out that although various events are presented separately as discontinuous fragments, they are thematically connected and integrated. All of the fragments refer to the theme of identity, especially to Zhang Dai's loyalty to the political stand and cultural values of the Late Ming intellectuals. It is also a presentation of both individual memory and group memory (of Zhang and his group of literati). While influenced by the Dongjing menghua lu of the Song, Tao'an mengyi differs in its expression of Zhang Dai's feelings and the role that the narrator plays.
