Kuang Zhouyi (1859-1926) is one of the most eminent ci poets and critics of the nineteenth century and his theories of zhong 重, zhuo 拙, and da 大 have attracted heated debates over the last two decades. His contribution in synthesizing traditional ci theories is, however, not limited to these three ideas. This article argues that as a prolific and passionate ci poet, Kuang gives valuable advice on how to be a good ci poet. Instead of following the practice of his predecessors by suggesting modelling after a particular Song poet, Kuang advocates ci wai qiu ci (learning ci from beyond the studying of ci) and emphasizes not only sharpening one's writing skills, but more importantly, perfecting the writer's own personal character. While this idea is prominent in the shi poetry tradition, critics find it challenging to apply the same notion to ci, which is often considered frivolous or even erotic in nature. By drawing on both Kuang's critique and his writing experiences, this article first investigates how Kuang deals with the relationship between a poet and his poetic composition. Then, it attempts to reconstruct Kuang's theory of ci composition by explaining factors that affect a poet, including his talent, character, aspirations, and knowledge of learning.
