The characteristics of the so-called Venerable Master Hsing Yun's thoughts of Humanistic Buddhism are referring to the special features reflected in the form and structure of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Humanistic Buddhism. This paper is a discussion and an examination of Venerable Master's thoughts of Humanistic Buddhism from four aspects: hermeneutics, traditional ideology, discourse patterns, and value pursuit, which all contain an inherent structure of tension. The focus of this paper is not on the traditional concept of "advayam", but on the inherent structure of tension, which reveals the distinctions in Venerable Master Hsing Yun's ideology because this"tension" is the modern characteristic of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Humanistic Buddhism. This paper also argues that an accurate understanding of the characteristics of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's thoughts has a significant importance in understanding the past, the present, and the future of Humanistic Buddhism as well as Chinese Buddhism.
