This preface introduces the articles published in the present issue of Communication & Society. It highlights the academic talk by Professor Todd Gitlin from the University of Columbia, and advocates a cross-disciplinary treatment of media studies. By tracing the academic career path of Prof. Gitlin and calling attention to his view of "media and communication as a way of life," it argues that media and communication scholars shall go beyond a narrowly-defined field of "media studies," try to absorb intellectual nutrition from different disciplines and develop a more holistic mode of study. Other articles in the issue are reviewed. While pointing out the merits of each article, some of the limitations in terms of research methods and conceptual framework are also discussed.
