A New Record of Fossil Turtle Chinemys reevesi (Gray) from Late Pleistocene, Taiwan Strait

A new record of fossil turtle, Chinemys reevesi (Gray), is described. The studied material was collected from the Taiwan strait, near Penghu Island. The morphologic characters of this fossil specimens are closely similar to those of the living species as follows: 1. The anterior end of epiplastron is round. 2. The entoplastron is divided by 2 sulci: one associated with the gulohumeral laminae, and the other with the humero-pectoral laminae. 3. The shape of entoplastron is rhomboidal. 4. The ratio of maximal length/maximal width of entoplastron is 0.9825. After restoration of the plastron, it is about 18cm in length and 11.2cm in width. This specimens is of a female, probably 8-10 years old. The geological age of this fossil is late Pleistocene.

本報告是描述臺灣海峽所産的新記錄化石金龜。其構造，形態與現生金龜Chinemys reevesi（Gray）相似，鑑定為金龜，化石採集地為臺灣海峽，澎湖水道。此化石標本只有一個腹甲，其最大長度為8.24cm，最大寬度為11.035cm，腹甲前半部保存完整，後半部缺失，無其他骨片。在分類上，此化石龜屬於龜鼈目order Testudines，陸龜科Family ＂Batagurinae＂，金龜屬Genus Chinemys。因具有以下四種特徵，故證明此化石龜與現生金龜同種。1.上腹甲的前端為圓形。2.內腹甲骨板由咽－肱盾縫及肱－肩盾縫所分割。3.內腹甲形狀為菱形。4.內腹甲的長度與寬度之比為0.9825，近於1。復原後此化石金龜長約18cm，寬約11.035cm，屬於雌性，年齡約為8到10歲。此化石龜的地質年代為晚更新世。此標本由台北市方水泉先生所提供。
