The modern metropolis of Wuhán comprises three earlier cities, i.e., Hánkou, Hányáng, and Wuchang. For modern Wuhán we have several different phonological descriptions, and for pre-modern Hánkou there are romanized records reaching back 125 years. On the basis of these sources it is possible to trace the history of the Hánkou sound system for the past century and quarter. Such a study reveals that the phonological history of this dialect was quite complex and reflects contact and convergence as well as simple historical sound change.
