Tillich's Interpretation of the Kingdom of God and Chinese Christian Eschatology

並列摘要

This paper attempts at exploring the significance of Paul Tillich's interpretation of the Kingdom of God for the construction of contemporary Chinese Christian eschatology. The paper consists of three main parts. The first part is a sketch of the background and development of Tillich's interpretation of the kingdom of God, indicating that Tillich's interpretation of the kingdom of God was developed in response to the socio-political context and in dialogue with other interpretations of history or hope. The second part outlines Tillich's interpretation of the kingdom of God formulated in his Systematic Theology, Vol. 3. The third part suggests what contemporary Chinese Christian eschatology may learn from Tillich's interpretation. It is proposed that Chinese Christian eschatology should: (1) reflect critically on the mainstream of Chinese theology which upholds an individualistic, other-worldly and futuristic eschatology; (2) engage in creative dialogue with the Chinese religions; (3) criticize the progressivistic interpretation of hope dominant in the Chinese secular culture and affirm the genuine hope for the democratic movement as a manifestation of the kingdom of God.
