The Bible in English Literature

The influence of the Bible on English literature is pervasive. In Anglo-Saxon times, literature uses the Bible to propagate Christianity. The Bible, stories and the translations are used to educate, morally orientate and to entertain people in order to create a harmonious society. In Middle English literature, the Bible was used because it was the discourse of power and the religious hierarchy. Stories from the Bible are mediated through performance in plays and songs, and through preaching and story-telling. In the age of the European Reformation and Renaissance, the Bible is translated into the vernacular. Standard Bible phrases enter popular discourse and Widespread understanding of the Bible text can be assumed. There are debates in literature about how the Bible should be understood. In the final period, from about 1850 to the present, with the effects of European Enlightenment and growth of rationalist scientific thinking challenging literal interpretations of the Bible, images, stories and motifs are used in varied ways in literature, adding resonance or creating dissonance for the reader.
