Toward a Materialist-Feminist Reading

Materialist reading of the Bible, as a scientific methodology and heuristic principle, may help to expose the idealism of the prevalent academic exegesis. Materialist approaches can be found mainly in three exegetical schools in Western Europe: the Sociohistorical School in Germany, the Amsterdam School in the Netherlands and the "Lecture matérialiste", among which the Sociohistorical School has become an influential branch of feminist exegesis in Germany. However, this article will concentrate on the "Lecture matérialiste" and the Amsterdam school. Although both of them are not so well known, it is assumed that their specific way of defining and handling the materiality of biblical texts could be of potential value for feminist-critical interpretations. The article first deals with the "Lecture matérialiste" and its textual theory together with certain hitherto undrawn feminist conclusions, and then examines the feminist implications of inner-biblical self-interpretation according to the Amsterdam approach, taking Luke as an example.
