An Autobiographical Approach to Feminist Biblical Scholarship

This paper employs an autobiographical approach to explain the process by which the author turned to scholarship in feminist biblical studies. The author became a feminist because of systemic sexism in her career and due to the support from feminist colleagues. After becoming a feminist, she forged her own way in feminist research, learning approaches from literary critics. At the end of the 1980s and during the 90s, the challenge from African American feminists to white feminists gave the author deeper insight into her particular identity as an Asian American, and as a result she turned to Asian American feminist thought and began to interpret the Bible from a new perspective. Towards the end of this article, the author suggests future directions and possibilities for feminist biblical criticism: that feminist biblical criticism will become increasingly interdisciplinary, that it will better integrate gender with issues of race, class, and colonial status in the analysis of the biblical texts, and that feminist biblical criticism can develop by incorporating new modes of discourse.
