The many apocalyptic verses in the Bible have been interpreted in various ways, from the predominantly allegorical interpretations of the early Church Fathers through to the "Premillennial Dispensationalist" interpretations of nineteenth-century American Evangelicals. This latter method tended to group together verses from different books in a highly literal reading which regarded biblical prophecies as predictions relevant to present times. The Left Behind series of fantasy novels is a typical example of this method in more recent usage. This article takes the Left Behind series at an entry point into an analysis of Premillennial Dispensationalism, outlining the apocalyptic tradition in the Bible, and the interpretations of the early Fathers. The article points out some inherent problems of this hermeneutical approach, which are helpful in understanding the particular tradition of Bible-inspired literature in America.
