"The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture" and Biblical Interpretation

"The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture" as a concept has invited heated discussion among scholars around the world in recent years. This paper attempts to reveal the motivations for and the content, biblical exegesis, ideology, and political agenda of this controversial concept. The basic assumptions of this paper are that: first, the concept shows the dissatisfaction and worries of an Israeli scholar over the contemporary development of Judaism and Jewishness in the Christian world; at the same time it shows a hope to rebuild through scholarship on the Hebrew Scriptures and public education true Jewish faith, a renewed spiritual unity in the Jewish nation and a central place for Jewish culture in the Western world. Second, as a result of its own ideology and political agenda, biblical exegesis under this concept is different both from Jewish traditions and especially from Christian ones. Based on textual demarcation and exegesis of the biblical books from Genesis to Kings, this paper hopes to explain the philosophical framework of the new concept through such topics as "shepherd ethics," "natural law," and "sacrifice."
