從電影〈失魂〉探究本土殘障解放神學的出路

An Attempt of the Contextual Liberation Theology of Disability in Taiwan with Movie 'Soul'

並列摘要

Among people with disabilities, mad persons are the most stigmatized. Madness has been viewed for a long time as the opposite of reason, the pure form of bestiality, or the counterpart of civilization. With the push of Modernism, the highly centralized asylums of the insane have been brought forth rapidly everywhere. In the early stage, the asylum tried to physical treatments, such as involuntary bondage, induced vomiting, bloodletting therapy, to overcome the inner bestiality of the patients with mental disability. Influenced by the Enlightenment, these brutal treatments have been replaced by moral therapy, using skills of management to discipline them and internalize reason and order. With the emergence of Psychology in the 19th century, alcoholism, masturbation, homosexuality, and the other inappropriate behaviors have been diagnosed as some types of mental illness. Postmodernism denounces the objectivity and neutrality of knowledge, doubts the lineal developmental theory of history. Instead, it argues the importance both of the deconstruction of the Modern reason and the criticism of logocentrism, and emphasis the subjective aspect of knowing, and the coexistence of diverse values. Its atmosphere brings anti-psychology movement into existence which challenges the notion of mental disorder and the medical authority of doctors, and casts suspicious eyes on the need of mental hospitals. 'Who is mad?', 'What can be qualified as sensible?', 'How can policy be really for the public interests?', these questions are at the fore front of the related disputes. This paper attempts to draw on the insights from the postmodernism, while using cultural analysis and interpretation of Movie 'Soul' as an example, to elaborate a possible discourse of liberation theology of disability in Taiwan.
