摘要

由於內戰失利，中華民國政府自西元1949年播遷到臺灣，面對中共強大軍力的持續威脅，雖然無論在幅員、人口、資源與防衛實力上，都遠遠不如對岸，但憑藉著外交折衝的努力，特別是與美國所建立的外交關係與防衛合作，終能在驚濤駭浪中安然度過多次臺海危機。本文即從臺美外交發展與防衛合作變遷的角度出發，回顧1950年代那段最危難的歲月。

The government of ROC had relocated in Taiwan after the Civil War in 1949. Facing the severe military threat from the other side of Taiwan Strait, Taiwan was inferior to the Mainland China in territory, population, natural resources and military ability. However, relying on elaborate diplomatic efforts, especially the close defense cooperation and bilateral relations with US, Taiwan had ridden out the Taiwan Strait Crises. This article will review the development of diplomatic relations and the transition of defense cooperation between ROC and US in 1950s, the toughest times Taiwan had gotten through.
