The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the foundimental theory, its ought-to-be struture and content and analyse the social studies of Japan and the United states of America, then bring up ideas of recorrection of elementary school's curriculum in this country. In all the processes of study, we mainly adopt comparison and analysis methods. There are seven chapters in this article. In the first chapter, the author tells the originality, the purposes nouns explaining, scale, methods and steps of study. In the second chapter, the writer tries to investigate theoritical foundation of social studies by philosophy, sociology and psychology. In this chapter, we study the theory of value, ethics, theory of structure of knowledge, sociology of knowledge, phenomena of society, theory of learning, and theory of development. Among them theory of structure of knowledge, sociology of knowledge, language development have rather new inspiration to social studies. In the third chapter, we investigate into the structure of social studies. Not only we have to study the structure outwardly but also to research it inwardly so to choose suitable structure according to the principles of structure. In the fourth chapter, we analyse the content of social studies of elemantary school. According to the results of analysis, the construction elements of scoial studies of elemantary school include social science and ecology, moreover they include current events, law education, livelihood education, races inheritance study and various skills and values. In the fifth chapter, we analyse the structure and content of social studies of both Japan and America elementary schools. Because America adopts discipline-centered curriculum that constructs the curriculum with conceptual schemes; while Japan takes community-centered curriculum. So, to distinguish between them according to the subject, we find both of them have broadfields curriculum style in apearance, but the construction is greatly different inside. In the sixth chapter, we analyse the structure and content of social studies of our own country. We find that the social studies of elementary school is quite similar to Japan's, but different from America's. There are demerits of structure in our social studies of elementary school: (1) Life and ethics which should be included in civics stands alone. (2) The structure of the textbook do not reach up to the standard and principles of its own. (3) There are narrative sentences all through the textbooks, and that is against children's natural language development. There are demerits of content too: (1) The range of content is narrow. (2) The portion of each content is not equal. In the last chapter, the writer investigates and analyses former statements and puts forward six points of suggestion to be the references of our social studies of elementary school when they are recorrected: (1) Making a to-and-including theoretic foundation to be the proof of curriculum compiling and development. (2) Life & ethics and social studies schould be a two-in-one subject. (3) To perform social studies experiments to find a suitable structure of curriculum. (4) To put attention to syntay structure in social studies of elementary school. (5) To enlarge the range of contents of social studies, and (6) To make a recorrection properly and adjust the portion of each content any time if necessary.
