The main purposes of this study are (1) to clarify the essential role traits that junior high school assistant principals on discipline should possess and the major role duties they should perform so as to afford for the position a clear role expectation which can not only be used by those in the position as a guide to play their role properly, but also be used by the principals to select the proper teachers for the position; (2) to obtain the fact about how the junior high school assistant principals on discipline on service have performed their role duties so as to know what they have achieved and what they haven't done well, and to suggest to improve the junior high school student discipline. The methods used in the study are theory and prescription analysis and sample survey. Some related theories and prescription are studied to induce the major items of the essential role traits those in the position should possess and of the role duties they should perform. The questionnaires, including the above items and other questions, are disigned to investigate the role expectation and the role performance of the position, and the feelings and troubles those on service have experienced. Besides, the basic data about the assistant principal subjects, including the age, the length on service, the professional level, the subject they teach, and the size and location of the school where they teach, are collected and analyzed, and used as statistical varibles. In this study, 179 principal subjects and 171 assistant principal subjects are selected in the stratified random sampling method. The major findings of this study are stated as follows: 1. High professional level is available to the role performance of the junior high school assistant principals on discipline, but the professional level of those on service isn't high enough. 2. The junior high school assistant principal on discipline is most expected to be an administer, then a counseling disciplinarian. Teaching skill doesn't seem so highly esteemed. 3. An excellent assistant principal on discipline should acquire enough know-ledge and skill on guidance. The main task of this position-seem to be something other than threating students to do this or that. 4. Most junior high school assistant principals on discipline have positive role perception of all their duties except these two: "to complete the task the political or other non-educational institutions ask them to undertake" and "to correct the students' behavior in the traditionally threating method"; the role expectation expressed by those in the position is quite accordant to that expressed by the principals. As expected, the junior high school assistant principals on discipline should take more responsibility for planning, communicating and coordinating in school, guiding students to live moral, patriotic, tidy, good-ordered, and secure lives. 5. There are not small proportion of junior high school assistant principals on discipline unsatisfied with the performance of most to their duties, while principals feel more satisfied in a favorable understanding with the same duties. Comparatively speaking, the assistant principals on discipline tend to control students' behavior eagerly, but neglect to lead students to live a moral, democratic and selfgoverning lives, and guide students to take part in the extra-curricular activities. 6. In the opinion of the principals, most of the role duties are performed more satisfyingly by the assistant principals serving in the township than by those serving in the city; those serving in large size schools (50 classes and more) have better performance of communication and coordination in school than those serving in small size schools (18 classes and less). 7. Most of the assistant principal subjects show their willingness in taking over such a toilsome position, but only a small proportion take their position to be a career one.
