This study discusses the character of Kaohsiung County Xiaolin Pingpu ethnic culture and the influences of state cultural policies, taking its religious belief as an example. First, it talks about the movement, settlement and development of the Xiaolin Pingpu tribe. Then, the environment which preserves the religious belief in traditional deities and spirits is discussed. The author tries to explain the heritage of the Xiaolin Pingpu traditional ethnic religious belief via two points of view, including the embodiments of gods (such as Laojyun, Taizu, and Uangyeqijiemei) and their way of life ( such as agriculture, hunting, and social customs). He also compares the differences between the Han people and the Pingpu from their inner cultural components. Finally, the influence of contemporary government cultural policies to the Xiaolin Pingpu's ethnic identity and culture transmission is remarked upon.
