The re-use practice of industrial building started in Europe during the 1970s. After Britain, Belgium was one of the first countries where industrial monuments could be protected by law. There are different types or degrees in re-using industrial buildings. 1st: re-use of useful structures without major modifications; 2nd: re-use after renovation-works, with architectural concept and with respect of the valuable elements of the re-used buildings; 3th: re-use of several buildings as part of an important regional project, as IBA-Emscher Park (1989-1999) in the Ruhr region (Germany). Each renovation of industrial heritage implicates compromises between two tendencies: 1. Conservation of a maximum of original characteristics, present in an old industrial building, including the machinery of original technical equipment; 2. Input of creative, personal signature and a more free intrpretation by the architect (or designer).
