It is conservator's obligation to understand the material nature and the deterioration mechanisms of an object before treatment. Aesthetic issues can be a major factor that influences the conservation assessment, in addition to safety considerations. The techniques and the materials used to produce silverware in the 19th century in western culture are here introduced. The point of view with regards exhibition needs is also discussed in this article. A comparison test of cleaning methods and materials was conduct as a reference before the conservation treatment of Chi Mei Museum's silver collection. The test results suggest that of three different kinds of cleaning method, mechanical cleaning achieved the better result.
