During the colonial rule of the White Raja of Sarawak, there was a large influx of Fujian immigrants from Mainland China to the basin area of the Sarawak River. The structure of Sarawak Chinese community can be seen from early immigrant community on how they set up companies, religious organisations and private schools through respective local clans. Early Chinese settlements in Kuching and Sibu are closely linked to the immigrants from Zhang Zhou and Quan Zhou. This paper will talk about how these pioneers from the two districts in China established themselves, the roles they played and the influence they had on the social and cultural aspects during the colonial period.
