Being Regius Professor of Modem History at Oxford for a long time, Stubbs had acted as a founding character in the formation of Oxford history subject in the second-half of nineteenth century. Before that, he had compiled much of excellent English Medieval historical documents, and trained himself as a first-rate historian. Then, he built modem historical methodology and historiographical system. By virtue of his authoritative historical works, Stubbs dominated the historical curriculum and examination system at Oxford, and helped to the establishment of its history subject. Through the Oxford history subject and the professional historians it trained, Stubbs had promoted greatly the enlargement of English history subject and even the preliminary establishment of its modem historiography.
