Yinshun印順(1906-2005) has been recognized as one of the major theorizers of renjian fojiao人間佛教. Right after Yinshun's passing, Taiwanese newspapers discussed the association between Yinshun and renjian fojiao in terms of a possible 'lineage transmission' (yimo chuancheng一脈傳承) of renjian fojiao. This lineage transmission, started with Taixu太虛(1890-1947), has Tzu Chi's Zhengyan證嚴 (b.1937) as current major representative, and includes Yinshun in the intermediate (and bridging) position. This paper will argue that, although linked to Taixu's teachings and the practice of other Buddhist communities in Taiwan, Yinshun's renjian fojiao embodied some unique features, including a Madhyamika doctrinal framework. The second part of the paper will focus on Yinshun's peer and follower monk Yanpei演培(1917-1996) and how he spread renjian fojiao in South East Asia, in order to assess the possible existence and characteristics of a 'renjian fojiao network'.
