The province of South Sulawesi is the largest producer of silk in Indonesia, far larger than West Java and other provinces. For the people of South Sulawesi, the silk industry is a traditional cottage industry that has become a cultural icon, being handed down from generation to generation, whilst the government promotes it as a major industry. This article seeks to describe community participation in the silk cottage industry with a focus on the three districts, Wajo, Enrekang and Soppeng in the province of South Sulawesi, and to discuss the challenges the industry faces. The article highlights various contributory factors to the thriving of the cottage industry as well as its challenge which need to be addressed in a wholesome and coordinated manner. Despite the various challenges, the silk industry is viable because there is a high demand for silk. However, the industry must be managed well in accordance with the right methods and model. In fact, a number of successful entrepreneurs has emerged in the silk industry as evidence of its viability. With regard to the community participation and the partnership model, the setting up of "Kompoeng BNI Tenun Sutera Wajo" (The BNI Silk Village in Wajo) established in Pakkana, Tanasitolo in the district of Wajo, is an example of the successful partnership between the community and other stakeholders namely Bank Negara Indonesia (Indonesian national bank) in order to advance the silk industry and its sustainability.
