The Investigation of Students' Perceptions of Social Problems and Willingness to Engage in Volunteer Behaviors

A social problem is defined as a situation that derives from social change and may negatively affect the lives or benefits of a part or the whole society. Collective actions will be needed to solve these problems before they cause severe destruction and damage. To understand students' perceptions of social problems, a questionnaire was designed and given to 60 students. The results showed that the top three severe problems that students ranked were traffic accidents, violent crimes, and environment pollution. However, the top three problems students would like to volunteer to provide help were not the same. The study also found that female students and religious students showed higher willingness to help than their male and nonreligious counterparts. Suggestions for future research include collecting more qualitative data through interviews, and identifying more connections between social issues and student volunteerism.
