Fieldwork: Learning paths of practice, project and transformation

Fieldwork is the key to production of geographic knowledge, and therefore the skills for fieldwork is regarded as a professional foundation in geography. Literature review in this essay explores transformations of fieldwork courses provided by geography departments in the context of British higher education. It is found that there has been a shift from traditional staff-guided field courses in the past towards the project-based practice engaged by students' teamwork for field studies. Drawn upon the tendency of field courses in Britain, the essay develops a set of learner-centred courses for field training. The curriculum is designed in a three-stage two-track structure in order to create multiple learning paths for students, including 'practical learning', 'project development' and 'reflexive transformation'. The learning paths help stimulate students' learning momentum, by which the basic skills and knowledge of fieldwork would be improved, and the ethics improved, and the ethics in the field would be carefully concerned. The fieldwork capacity promoted by this course is supposed to be well-applied to intensive learning in various sub-fields of human geography.
