The Nine-category Classification of Characters was a Socio-political product of the Wei-Tsin times, and, according to the ＂Treatise on Literature＂ in The History of Sui, that period also saw the appearance of a large number of biographies of various types. There must have been some relationship and interaction between these two contemporaneous occurrences. In fact, the voluminous biographical writing of Wei-Tsin owed its existence not only to the opportunity afforded by its epoch for unrestricted development of individual characters and idiosyncratic feelings, but also to the great amount of personal data and files available in those times. These data and files were compiled at first for the purpose of classifying the official-literati's characters.
