The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the companies committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR) by valuing the interests of all the stakeholders have better financial performance when they encountered the financial crisis. Using years 2007 to 2009 as the sample period, this study tests whether the firms, listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TSEC), having been honored the CSR award have better financial performance, measured by return on total assets (ROA) than those not been honored CSR award during the financial crisis. The empirical results show that firms honored CSR award have better financial performance (higher ROA) than those not honored CSR award for year 2009 and the whole period during year 2007-2009. When we replace ROA with ROE, our results even support our expectation for year 2008, in addition to year 2009 and year 2007-2009. In general, our results suggest that the CSR-awarded firms have better financial performance than non-CSR-awarded firms during the financial crisis.
