As fintech becomes more and more prevalent, various new business models emerge in the financial services industry. The peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, which allows lenders to lend to borrowers via the internet without financial institutions working as intermediates, has soon grasped people’s attention. Using the data of P2P platforms in China, this thesis aims to find out the factors that have significant effects on the expected return and operating risk of a P2P platform. The results in this thesis will be valuable to investors for evaluating P2P platforms. The thesis finds that larger P2P platforms have lower operating risk and a lower expected return. The P2P platforms that employ large banks as their depository mechanism providers also have a lower expected return. In general, the tradeoff between return and risk remains solid. In addition, the platforms whose major business domains involve the use of collateral seem to have a higher expected return.
