Mobile systems will increasingly feature emerging OLED displays equipped with extremely-high display resolution and density. In the past, most papers focused on reducing the OLED power consumption or power saving for GPUs respectively. This paper explores how to reduce the system power consumption by co-governing the power saving for OLED displays with power saving for GPUs based on sliding-based usage pattern on smartphone’s application. First, we point out our idea by a small experiment. Then, we propose the algorithm that is based on human acuity and scrolling speed to design for OLPD (OLED pixel disabling) and DRS (Dynamic resolution scaling). Finally, based on the design of each component, we analyze the power saving level of OLPD and DRS respectively and provide the co-governing policy between OLED display and GPU. The results of experiments conducted on commercial smartphone with popular interactive apps demonstrate that OLDS can achieve substantial energy savings, while preserving acceptable image quality.
